By now you are probably aware of the 18 year old kid in California who was ticketed for speeding while driving at 62 miles per hour in a 45 miles per hour zone. The officer who wrote the ticket allegedly clocked Shaun Malone at 62 mph, and ticketed him for driving 17 mph OVER the speed limit. As it turned out, Shaun Malone's parents had installed a tracking GPS device in his car in an effort to monitor his driving habits. Good parental intent aside, Malone's parents have data which shows Shaun Malone was traveling at 45 mph when he was stopped by the police.

Chrysler announced the 2009 availability of their UConnect Web service for in-vehicle wifi. Through a partnership with Mopar, Chrysler will offer aftermarket wifi and cellular data services which essentially will turn your Chrysler into a hot spot.

The package will include satellite radio, an integrated car phone, built in GPS, and streaming television. UConnect customers will be able to receive calls using a Bluetooth hands free headset, and will have a 30 GB hard drive for photos and videos.

Renting a car has recently become more expensive but not because of increasing fuel costs. According to the New York Times, major car rental companies including Hertz, Enterprise, National, and Alamo have begun adding premium charges for car rentals which include systems for GPS and satellite radio. These charges are intended to offset the slim margins in the highly competitive car rental business. Analyst and industry watchers alike have begun expressing mixed views of the competition posed by mobile phones with GPS capabilities.
